TOTP Authenticator: Understanding the Time-Based One-Time Password Algorithm

Calculating the TOTP Value

The authenticator and the authenticatee (individual or organization) compute the TOTP value using the algorithm above. The authenticator then checks whether the supplied TOTP value matches the locally generated one.

Pre-Establishing Parameters

To establish TOTP authentication, both parties must pre-establish the HOTP parameters and the following TOTP parameters:

1. TX: The interval used to calculate the counter (default is 30 seconds).

2. T0: The Unix time from which to start counting time steps (default is 0).

History of TOTPs

In May 2011, TOTP officially became RFC 6238, a standard developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). This version incorporated feedback and commentary from the technical community. In 2008, OATH submitted a draft version to the IETF, which was later refined through collaboration among several members.
